Early September brings new meaning to the term Gold Rush in Colorado. When the Aspens turn from green to gold you know winter is close behind. Riding in the high country of Colorado will give you rich rewards. As you pedal through amber canopies of leaves and crisp autumn days, the Colorado high country is like no place else. By now you have peaked in riding skills and ability and you are ready to continue on with serious riding. Whether on the road or singletrack, this time of year brings changes and changes fast. Buena Vista loosely translates to beautiful view and there are plenty to be seen. Nestled in the Arkansas Valley this town buzzes with summer excitement. From river running to four wheel mountain excursions many exciting options are offered. Let's talk about the two wheeled kind in the form of a road ride. Start from town on HWY 24, head north along this well maintained thorough fare which has plenty of shoulder for you to navigate your short voyage. You will find yourself in Chaffee County, home to fifteen of the fifty-three Mountains above 14,000 ft. known in these parts as "fourteeners". The Collegiate Peaks, Mount Columbia, Harvard, Oxford, Princeton and Yale will be in plain view as you continue your trek toward Leadville. You will soon see Mount Elbert which is the state's highest peak coming in at 14,433 ft. above sea level. This majestic peak is usually snow covered year round and will offer you a glimpse of why Colorado is the place for high country adventure. Leadville is approaching rapidly and it's time for the rider to prepare to enter the highest incorporated city in the United States. At a staggering elevation of 10,152 feet, the town has much to offer after your task of pedaling this wonderful route to the clouds. Please click on the family fun page for more facts about this old mining town that has found a way to thrive where oxygen is hard to come by.
